Understanding the Apple M5 Series processors

Apple announced the M5 chip on October 15, 2025, along with the new iPad Pro, 14-inch MacBook Pro and Vision Pro. The M5 is based on a “third-generation 3-nanometer” process. It has up to 10 CPU cores (3 or 4 performance and 4 or 6 efficiency) and up to 10 GPU cores.

Apple M5 Pro
The M5 Pro is a more powerful version of the M5, with five or six “super” cores, ten or twelve performance cores, 16 to 20 GPU cores, 16 Neural Engine cores, and up to 64 GB unified RAM with 307 GB/s memory bandwidth. It is used in the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro. Apple claims the CPU performance is 2.5x faster than the M1 Pro and the GPU is 2.2x faster than the M1 Pro.

Apple M5 Max
The M5 Max is a larger version of the M5 Pro, with six “super” cores, twelve performance cores, 32 to 40 GPU cores, 16 Neural Engine cores, and up to 128 GB unified RAM with up to 614 GB/s memory bandwidth. It is used in the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro. Apple claims the CPU performance is 2.5x faster than the M1 Max and the GPU is 2.2x faster than the M1 Max.

The M5 Series Apple silicon have appeared. Apple is expected to have a sort of annual release rhythm, so it is very likely you will see M5 variants now through 2026.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max are expected in early 2026. The M5 Ultra is expected in 2026.

The standard M5 chip uses N3P, the 3rd generation of its 3nm process, and is a traditional SoC (System on a Chip) design. The M5 Pro, Max and Ultra chips are expected to utilize newer SoIC (System on Integrated Chip) packaging technology, which involves 3D stacking of chips to enhance performance and thermal management.

The brilliance of Apple silicon is the components of each one are the same. There are just more or less of them in each type.

Performance of the various M5 processors, just like their predecessors really will boil down to the base M5 processor performance. At this point M5 Pro, M5 Max and M5 Ultra specifications below are rumored but likely close.

CPU & GPU Performance Benchmarks

The M5 Max 18 CPU cores with 40 GPU cores is the fastest Apple Silicon made currently, at least until the M5 Ultra is released later this year. Personally I think the M5 Max 18 CPU cores with 32 GPU cores is the sweet spot for most power users and what I would consider buying if I were in the market. The M5 Ultra will go beyond power user needs in my opinion.
